In this blog series, we shine a light on the skippers who are going to be your captain in Greece. It was so tough choosing between al the amazing applications we received. We are proud to have these driven and beautiful eco adventure people in the network ready to take the lead.  After some tough decision making with an overwhelming amount of skipper applications, it’s decided. We selected a diverse captain team to support, share and sprinkle ocean magic into your life in Greece.

They shine and stand out because of their commitment to ocean nomads, ocean conservation, embodying the ocean nomads values and won’t settle for anything less than bring you the best sailing experience ever.

A Brief summary of his ocean nomads life so far

Tyler joined us sailing in the Caribbean last year. An injury unfortunately cut his trip short but his character prevailed and showed us his ocean nomads spirit and stokedness. We’re excited to have his energy and skills on board to get you as excited about sailing as he is.

Let’s get to know Tyler! We asked him a few ocean questions.

Why are you excited Skippering joining Ocean Nomads in Greece?

Exploring Greece by boat has always been a dream of mine! It’s one of those countries that just begs to be experienced from the water! And the Ocean Nomads offers a trip that is REAL exploration, not just a week of partying at crowed tourists spots that many people consider “sailing”.

I believe that sailing is the last true form of exploration and connection with nature. I think Ocean Nomads shares those same values, as well as a commitment to sustainable sailing. Although brief, I loved my time sailing with the Ocean Nomads Community. I want everyone on my boat to walk away just as excited as I am about sailing.

Which stories / skills are you excited about teaching / sharing?

I love teaching people to become passionate about sailing! A lot of seamanship skills are little skills and tricks passed from passionate sailor to passionate sailer to make every part of living on the boat easier and I’m happy to give everyone those “Ah-ha!” moments. Its the moment of excitement when people realize “oh, we can really go anywhere” that I live for in new sailors. For practical hard skills: I love teaching Freediving or Spearfishing and I’m always game for a surf session!

What has been one of the most epic ocean adventures so far?

I crewed a sailboat through remote Fiji for 4 months in total. Every day was island hopping and swimming in the pristine water surrounded by fish and wildlife. After a few months of living completely off the grid and relying on the ocean as both my playground and grocery store, this amazing change happened with how I began to relate to nature. I began to see myself as a part of all the wildlife and nature around me rather than separate from it. It’s a magic that is hard to describe until you immerse yourself in a life like that.

What does the ocean mean to you?

The Ocean is so many things to me. It’s my playground, my sense of wonder, a place for calm, and a place to challenge myself. I grew up in Key West, Florida, a small island less than 2 miles wide so the ocean is my childhood home.

What’s your wildest ocean-related dream that you’d love to experience in a lifetime?

Someday I want to run an informal Sail / Surf charter that travels to the greatest and hardest-to-reach waves in the world: places like the Mentai Islands, Fiji, and remote New Zealand. We would pick up groups of adventures, chase waves, and live off the grid for months at a time, all while trying to attract like-minded amazing people to join us.
