Zero to Ocean Nomad
Get on your first sailboat
Safe, prepared, sustainable, and soon!
You don’t need experience. You need a way in.
Imagine a few weeks from now
- You wake up on a sailboat in a remote anchorage only reachable by sail
- You explore islands and coastlines you didn’t even know existed
- Screentime has gone down to zero. Nature-time to an all-time high
- You’ve made more memorable moments in one week than your last months combined
- You’ve made new friends as excited about ocean adventuring as you are
- You feel what it’s like to live resourcefully, and that you don’t need much to be happy
People in this community have gone from zero experience to crossing oceans, buying boats, and building a life at sea. No worries if you didn’t grow up sailing. It starts with knowing how to get in.
Suzanne explains it in 3 minutes
Who this is for
This is for you if
- You feel the pull of ocean exploration but don’t know where to start
- You want to get on a sailboat, not just keep dreaming about it
- You want to sail in a conscious, healthy, and eco-aligned way
- You want to feel safe and prepared, not just wing it
- You like slow travel, nature, and being part of a crew
- You want to sail your own boat someday
- You want to sail oceans and be ready!
This is not for you if
- You’re looking for a luxury holiday
- You don’t want any responsibility on board
- You’re not open to learning or showing up
“I signed up. One week sailing turned into 1.5 months. Together with other Ocean Nomads, we sailed from Northern Spain to the Canaries. I fell in love with the sailing lifestyle and bought my own sailboat. Without Suzanne and the community, I would not be where I am now.”

How this works
Insights, a system and support for the 90% of sailing life that no sailing course teaches.

02
Find the right boat and be safe.
Where to find boats (online and in the wild). How to write a profile captains actually reply to. The 54-point Safety Scorecard to assess any boat and captain. Red flags, green flags. What to agree on before you commit.
03
Connect with the people who support you.
The Ocean Nomads community: 80+ boat owners, private crewing board, monthly meetups. Advice along the way. Most boats here are never posted publicly. They’re shared between people who trust each other.
This is what’s between “I want to sail” and “I’m on a boat.”

Your guide
Suzanne van der Veeken
Hi! My name is Suzanne. I went from zero to 50,000+ nautical miles on 100+ boats. Every continent. 5 Atlantic crossings. I started with no experience, no connections, and no idea how to get on a boat. I thought sailing was for rich people. Sailing life is a way of life that can be lived long-term on a tiny budget. I’m living nomadic for almost two decades. I
Along the way I got my captain’s license, wrote two books, organized 25+ sailing expeditions, and founded the Ocean Nomads community. In this course I share what I learned over all these years. To help you get out there in a happy, safe, and meaningful way. And not too far from today.
- 50,000+ nautical miles
- 100+ boats across 30 countries
- 5 Atlantic crossings
- 25+ sailing expeditions organized
- 18+ years of nomad life
- Yachtmaster Offshore captain
- Author of Ocean Nomad & Salz auf der Haut
- Started from zero as an adult
“What to say about Suzanne? You have to meet her in person. She has a deep love for the sea and she is helping others to experience the same. It was an amazing experience to sail with her. She constantly inspired us to explore, to test things out and enjoy her little surprises along the way.”
Matthias, Germany
Why most people never get on a boat
- They think they need experience first. They don’t.
- They’re unsure who to trust, so they keep researching instead of moving.
- They think they need money. Crewing costs €0-50/day.
- They think they need time. You can start with a week.
- They aim straight for their own boat without testing the waters
- They don’t know where to find the right boats.
- They have a bad first experience and give up.
The dream isn’t the problem. Not knowing how is.
Zero to Ocean Nomad is a way in. The steps, a trusted network, and safety tools.

There’s no map for this life. That’s why you need a compass.
“This course is soooo valuable, I wish it was there when I quit my job to go sailing in 2022! I was unsatisfied with my 9-5 and really needed new inspiration and a fresh start to make more positive impact and sailing is a perfect way to do that! I went sailing with very little skills, money and plans, but luckily I discovered the Ocean Nomads community who was a huge help to navigate this whole new ocean world. Following this course before leaving would have for sure prevented me a lot of hassle. Sooo grateful for Suzie’s work.”
Julie Gambiez · Quit her 9-5 in 2022 to go sailing
“I consider myself a reasonably well travelled person but until now I had never even considered sailing as a means of travel! Suzanne has changed my perspective. It now feels possible, achievable and a very real prospect.”
John – Vanlifer but not for long…
The real advantage
The Ocean Nomads Community
The videos and tools teach you how. The community gives you who. Most boats and opportunities are never posted publicly, if published at all. They’re shared between people who trust each other. This is where those connections happen.
- A global network of liveaboards, boat owners, and aspiring crew
- Private crewing board with unadvertised opportunities
- Monthly meetups
- Support at every stage of your journey

“What I hoped to gain was the option of finding crew. Instead what I found is a collection of people who get what I do, who understand why we make certain choices and who are willing to support each other.”
Michiel, boat owner
The boats are leaving. Will you be on one?
Mediterranean season starts in May. Atlantic crossing season opens in November. The hatch closes at the Full Moon weekend, May 3. Personal support spots are limited.

What this replaces
A sailing course (just the skills)
€500 – 2,000
One wrong boat (wasted flights, time, energy)
€500+
Months of research and trial-and-error
Budget, time & energy draining
What it costs to do this wrong
This was posted in a sailing community this week. We see versions of it weekly.
CREW WARNING Pacific crossing
We committed to a Pacific crossing and paid a $2,000 deposit. The departure was delayed week after week, six weeks total. We stayed in Panama far longer than planned, draining our travel budget. The boat had been dealing with serious technical issues since December. We only learned the real situation through the captain’s social media, not direct communication. We lost $2,000 and six weeks.
This is what Module 5 is all about: preventing costly situations. Or worse, unsafe ones.
What happens after you enroll
From research mode into actually living it.
Week 1
You stop wondering if this is realistic. You see how people get on boats and what kind of sailing fits your life. The fog lifts.
Week 2-3
Your crew profile is live. You’ve sent your first messages. You’re inside the community where boats and opportunities get shared. You’re no longer a person thinking about sailing. You’re a person doing it.
Week 4-8
You’re having conversations with captains. You know how to assess them for safety. You can tell a good boat from a risky one. You know how to say no.
Soon after
You’re on a boat. The view is real. The community has your back.

Explore the ocean nomadic lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of.
I was completely mindblown that traveling like this is even an option. None of us had ever set foot on a sailboat. Suzanne planted a seed. With the support of the Ocean Nomads network, that seed became 5 boats, 9 islands, 4700 nautical miles, and a journey from Tenerife to Guatemala. This community kept providing me with opportunities to continue my way closer to Central America.”
Simon. Sailed from Europe to Central America.
Another season passes. Another summer where you think about it. Another winter where it stays a dream.
Not because you can’t do it. But because you never found your way in.
Most people go from idea to their first real conversations with captains within 2 to 3 weeks. You can go through this in a weekend or take it step by step alongside your normal life. And from there, things move fast.

Jesse went from zero to sailing the Atlantic. “Getting an insight into sailing community, what goes on at the docks, what to look out for. How to avoid bad experiences, how to be picky. There’s a lot things in the course that made me feel more secure coming the trip. It was the best week of my life.” – Jesse
