The Journey
What it feels like
A week of slow living at the edge of the Atlantic. Mornings start with coffee and the sound of waves. You ride horses along empty beaches at sunrise, surf Atlantic swells by day, and sail the Ria de Aveiro lagoon in the afternoon light. Simple. Grounded. Outdoors. Just you, the land, the animals, the ocean, and a small group of like-minded souls sharing the week.
Route & rhythm
We base the week at Bonanza the land, a tranquil off-the-grid property in Ovar, on the Atlantic coast of Northern Portugal. Ovar sits at the northern edge of the Ria de Aveiro, roughly 40–60 minutes south of Porto. Around us: kilometres of sandy beaches like Praia de Furadouro, pine forest, dunes, and the lagoon.
Days are shaped by the tides and weather, not a fixed schedule. Some mornings you ride along the beach; other mornings you catch waves. One full day is spent sailing on a traditional Portuguese sailboat on the Aveiro Lagoon, with a shared picnic on the water. Afternoons are free to explore the nearby town of Ovar with its famous azulejo tiles and historic churches, rest on the land, or dip into optional wellbeing sessions — horse therapy, massage, Qi Gong, acupuncture, or TRE.
Breakfast is prepared as a team. Lunch and dinner come from a local vegan Portuguese chef, made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. One evening we eat out together at a local restaurant. The rhythm is slow, intentional, and shaped by the land and the sea.
Experience
This is the Ocean Nomads and Bonanza the land slow living philosophy in practice — simplicity, health, local food, community connection, active adventure, and a sustainability mindset. Our horses are carefully trained, lovingly handled, and live in a natural herd environment with plenty of room to roam. A dedicated team of veterinarians and equine specialists keeps them healthy year-round — you ride with animals who are truly cared for.
Surfing and riding are guided by experienced local instructors. No experience needed in either. Basic fitness is enough. What matters is your openness to try, connect, and be part of a small group sharing the adventure.

Your TRIP LEADER
Carine
This journey started in 2021 as a dream of Carine, a Dutch woman living in Portugal for over 8 years. She always wanted to create a place where people can connect with nature in a meaningful way — a place near the sea, because she loves to surf. Ricardo, her partner — a surfer, sailor, artist, and carpenter — has been by her side, helping turn this dream into reality. Together, they built everything from the ground up.

Your TRIP LEADER
Brianna
A lifelong nature and animal lover living a semi-nomadic, adventure-driven lifestyle. Brianna divides her time between life near the ocean, aboard a sailboat, traveling by van, and exploring the world through nature-based experiences. As a Community Captain with Ocean Nomads, she connects people through sailing, environmental awareness, and shared adventure — while continuing to deepen her relationship with animals, land, and sea wherever she is.
