Crew Briefing
Sailing Greece with Ocean Nomads

Welcome on board the Ocean Nomads Fleet in Greece!

Here are the first waypoints to help you navigate smoothly and prepare for Greece this October.

The Trip

You are part of the largest ocean nomads gathering to date. 🙂 Four vessels and around 35 Ocean Nomads will unite for a beautiful adventure through 11 Days!

How exciting!  Thank you for jumping on board and contribute to make this a beautiful gathering.

Your Skippers

Blair Stafford
Thomas van Thiel
Tyler Chesebro
Brianna Brady & Suzanne van der Veeken

and YOU! Together we make this into a legendary sailing event!

We have a beautiful mix of nomads from different nationalities and with all such interesting dreams, missions and backgrounds. Most of you are courageously coming alone to (dis)connect, adventure and make impact. Everyone is celebrated for sharing their questions, stories, skills, and perspectives. Above all this trip is about having fun, BEing, and getting energized! We can only do good when we feel good. The whole journey is a team effort. Together we make it an experience to never forget.

Logistics

Trip Dates: Saturday, October 12 Until October 22

Where do we start the journey?

Check-in: October. 12, Lefkada.

Meeting Point

Lefkada Town on the square next to the harbour 38° 50′ 1.04″ N, 20° 42′ 40.48″ E (Google Maps Link)

Meeting Time: 14.30 Saturday October 12.

On Saturday we already do most of the provisioning for the trip.
Are you already in Lefkada Saturday morning? Join for the weekly farmers market! RSVP

We can board the boats at +/-17.30

Saturday evening, we have dinner and a gathering (most likely on board) to meet, greet and share some trip details. The first day may be a long, eventful day for many, with arriving, meeting new people, provisioning, boarding and info. We’ll try not to overwhelm you :). Sunday morning we aim to sail away.

End point: Nea Peramos 38° 0.03′ N, 23° 25.30′ E (Google Maps Link) Tuesday October 22, Midday 12.00

Check flight / public transport connections in the Crew Briefing.

Team up for logistics in the Greece Group on the Network.

Our journey starts at Lefkada island (also known as Lefkas), Ionian Sea, Greece. Lefkada is an island connected to the mainland via a small bridge. We will depart from the town and port of Lefkada, which is in the north of the island.

Where do we end the journey?

Just west of Athens in Nea Peramos.  We aim to arrive in Athens on October 21, and checkout will be on October 22 in the morning.
Unless unfavourable weather decides differently for us.

How to reach Lefkada?

By foot, bike, van or flight. Or sail! 🙂
You can fly to Preveza (closest), Athens (and then take a 5-hour bus), or Corfu (and then take a 6 hour / 20 euro ferry). Or hitchhike. Or hitchsail 🙂

From the airport
From Preveza (PVK) airport, you can easily reach Lefkada by taxi or bus. It’s about a 20-minute ride. If you arrive in Athens (ATH), you can take a 5-hour KTEL bus drive to reach Lefkada (30-40 euro). That’s a beautiful scenic route. Buses are comfortable. Please note that the KTEL bus does not leave directly from Athens airport.
Check Flightconnections to Preveza here.

Staying in Lefkada or Athens.

Airbnb and Booking are commonly used ways in Greece to find and book accommodation. That said, these websites take fees. Try to book directly with the provider for the best rate AND local contribution. Scooter rental is about 15 euro/day which you can consider to stay outside of town.

Disembarkation

We aim to arrive in Athens on October 21 and disembark the next morning. If the weather doesn’t allow us to safely reach port by that date, the trip may take longer. If you are not available for that, we will drop you off somewhere safe and convenient.

If you can, go to Greece earlier and/or stay longer after the trip. It’s a very beautiful place!

Packing Tips

Make sure to bring:

  • Layers to be able to stay warm, wind and rainproof. The evenings can be chilly.
  • Swim outfit
  • Shoes for hiking / exploring
  • Sun protection
  • Hammock or sleepingbag if you want to sleep outside some night (Recommend!) We arranged linen and bedsheets for you so you don’t have to bring it.
  • Personal items / medicine. We will visit small towns and places where it’ll be hard to find things.
  • Your passport!
  • Cash for onshore contribution to the local scene and yummy Greek food.
On the Network Hub we have a sailing packing resource with a complete list (3 Month Free Trial).

Paperwork

Please fill out this embarkation form with your passport data, emergency contact, allergies, medical conditions, and a few more data for smooth sailing and safety. (Before end of September).

Communication

We have created a Greece Ocean Nomads Crew Group on the Ocean Nomads membership network. Here you can already team up and meet fellow crew mates, share your arrival details, and discuss logistical challenges. Joining our network is optional and not essential for this trip. It’ll give you access to tips, resources and our wider global ocean people network.

Here is a 3-month trial membership for Greece crew so you can make the most out of your trip participation.

During the event, we will probably create a whats app group for quick communication, location and photo sharing.

If you put things on the socials use #oceannomadsand #ONgreece & tag us @oceannomads.community so we can care and share. Our vibe attracts our tribe!

If you have a European SIM it’s likely your phone data will also work in Greece at a similar rate. If you need it, the airport may have a local SIMcard, or get an ESIM in advance via Vodafone Greece or Airolo. Many places also have wifi. Or better, make it to the meeting point and turn off the phone for 10 days 🙂

Provisioning

Together as a team on each boat, we take care of the provisioning and cooking. This is part of the fun, consumption awareness journey, skill development, and team spirit! We have a vegetarian and alcohol-free onboard policy. A Greek wine or dish on shore is no problem.

Our skippers take care of your safety and navigation of the trip. As crew we take care of our skippers when it comes to food 🙂

Route

On purpose, we don’t plan out the route in detail. Above all, the weather will rule, and this is a hands-on trip, involving you as much as possible in creating this adventure.
We adjust the sails to experience the most beautiful, safe, and happy voyage.

The trip is a beautiful opportunity to learn from each other, share skills, professions, knowledge, and feedback, and accelerate and develop dreams, projects, and solutions. Each one of us comes from a different background, with different life experiences, skills and perspectives. Don’t hesitate to bring in your superpowers!

Be fit, stay healthy, keep smiling, expect the unexpected and SEA YOU SOON!

If you have any more questions, it is best to ask them in this space; others may have similar questions or solutions.

Check back in here soon, this briefing is evolving as we get more details 🙂

Efharisto!
See you in Greece 🙂
