Ocean. Adventure. Resilience. Sisterhood.
This week, we’re gathering in Scheveningen to screen Women & the Wind, a raw and intimate documentary that chronicles the transatlantic voyage of three women aboard Mara Noka, a 50-year-old wooden catamaran.
Over 30 days at sea, they confront the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean, the presence of plastic pollution in even its most remote corners, and the depths of their own inner strength.

A Story of Purpose-Driven Exploration
Captured through the lens of filmmaker Alizé Jireh, this film goes far beyond beautiful sailing footage. It brings us face-to-face with what it means to live with the sea. It is a cinematic invitation to explore not just the ocean, but our own connection to nature, purpose, and one another.

“Three women ignite the flames of curiosity and adventure that lie dormant within so many of us, by deepening our understanding of the synergy between nature and humanity and by doing so radically, through a voyage.”
Real-Life Ripples

We first met Lærke Heilmann during a beach cleanup in the Canary Islands a few years ago. She told us about her dream to sail across the Atlantic with a female crew, on a wooden catamaran, raising awareness for the ocean. We thought, WILD! We happened to have a copy of Ocean Nomad in the van and passed it on. That moment stayed with us. And now, here it is. A dream transformed into a film.
We later connected with Angie Davis and her wonderful family, the producer, and founding member of Ocean Nomads. They are now building their own wooden catamaran by hand and launching a storytelling and research journey with VoyageVirage. Their work, including the Regenerative Tides initiative, explores the impacts of fiberglass boats and supports citizen science and community engagement.
We are sure sooner or later we will cross paths with the captain behind it all, Kiana, as this fleet of impact continues to grow.
Why This Film Resonates with Ocean Nomads
This story aligns with the Ocean Nomads ethos. We believe that adventure is not just for personal escape, but a way to reconnect. To nature. To ourselves. To each other. And to the sea that sustains us.
We use wind-powered travel as a platform for exploration, contribution, and conscious living. Women & the Wind reflects this beautifully. It is a story of courage, simplicity, and meaningful movement. It’s everything we stand for and strive for.
About the Host
This screening is hosted by Ocean Nomads Ambassador Lovisa Oosterhof. Lovisa is a graphic designer, sailor, and proud owner of MISTY, a 38-foot steel sailboat she’s been refitting and living aboard along the rugged North Sea coast. She brings quiet strength, creativity, and a deep love for the sea to everything she does.
