The Journey

What it feels like

Wake up on the ocean. Breathe ocean air. Wind in your hair. Navigate by the stars. Live simple and resourceful. Day in, day out. The horizon stays the same for two weeks and somehow that becomes the point. The boat moves with the swell, the sails stay full, and the watches become the rhythm of your days. Sailing across the Atlantic is a rare once in a lifetime adventure that removes you from everything but nature and your fellow shipmates.

Route & rhythm

From Santa Cruz, Tenerife in the Canary Islands we sail south to Cape Verde. Around 850 nautical miles, +/- a week at sea. A few days ashore to rest and resupply, then we turn west and sail across the Atlantic on the trade wind route to Tobago. Roughly 2,400 nautical miles in 14 to 18 days. The route is shaped by wind, not a schedule. From there, Caribbean sailing begins.

Days at sea revolve around watches, sharing and caring. A few hours on, longer off, around the clock. In between, it’s all about the simple things. Cooking, eating together, sleeping, reading, staring at the big blue, fixing, and community life at sea. You learn the ropes of the ship as you go. Helming, navigation, reading the wind, seamanship and all that comes with it. The first few days are about finding your sea legs. By the second week, the routine is the rhythm and the ocean is home.

Experience

Conversations and connections at sea go deeper in one day than in weeks on land. Twister carries a small crew for a tallship but big enough for a real community feel at sea together with fellow Ocean Nomads from diverse backgrounds, sharing similar vibes and values. Full ON participation, remoteness, a lot of blue and that magical night sky which you’ll observe for a moon cycle.

Participation

No experience needed. You learn by doing. We sail, cook, navigate, and live together as one crew. Plans may change with the wind. That’s part of it.

Moments

Sunrise on deck after night watch. Diving off the boat in 5,000 metres of water. Eye to eye with dolphins on the bow wave. Cape Verde exploration mid-crossing. Phosphorescence in the wake. The moment a new country appears on the horizon after two weeks at sea.

SV Twister is a schooner built in 1902. Originally a wooden fishing boat, her hull was replaced with steel fifty-five years later so she could keep sailing. She still does. Beautiful, solid, spacious, and full of soul. No plastic push buttons or winches. Dutch flag, modern offshore comforts, and every safety certificate. Last season she sailed 5,000 nautical miles offshore in conditions from champagne sailing to a 9 Beaufort. The only thing that broke were two plates.

  • Schooner built 1902, 36 m (118′), 88 tonnes
  • 6 sails, 332.5 m² sail area, Mercedes Benz 300 PK engine
  • 22 berths in shared cabins, 2 bathrooms
  • Dutch flag, full offshore safety certificates
  • Home port: Amsterdam, Holland

  • The feel of waking up on the ocean. Day in, day out
  • Seamanship Skills: helming, navigation, reading the wind, living with nature.
  • A crew you’ll know in a way you can’t fake on land
  • A new measure of time, where days are wind and stars
  • A rhythm of living that stays with you long after arriving
  • You sail across an ocean!

Still smiling at the memories! Met, and still talking to, some lovely people. Refreshed my nautical skills (helming, navigation, astro identification, etc.) Shared some great experiences through conversation, music, stories, yoga, cooking together, seeing ocean wildlife, and so much more!

— Richard (Expedition ON)

Ocean Nomads are the best sailing trip organizers ever. What I love about them is that they do no-alcohol, vegetarian trips only, which completely changes the vibe of the trip. It’s all about fun, sailing, friendly atmosphere, and being together with pristine nature. From one to five, they get six stars!

Ocean Nomads Vibes & Values

Ocean Nomads is about more than travel. It’s about living closer to nature, connecting with like-minded people, and stepping into a different rhythm. These trips are where it starts.

Exploration, new places and experience powered by wind and curiosity

It’s the people who make the adventure

“This was one of the most epic experiences of my life so far, and I can tell it is just the beginning.  The ocean has taught me so many lessons…to embrace all experiences (even seasickness), not worry so much, and just be in the moment. Weeks without connection to the outside world was absolutely glorious. I feel reset. After a very fragmented life the past few years, being around a crew of 17 people every day was amazing…to interact naturally with each other, feel a part of a family of diverse ages, nationalities and backgrounds…I learned so much from these amazing humans. My heart feels so full.” – Sael

— Sael, Atlantic Crossing on Twister

“The sailing with such a beautiful ship. It is absolutely breathtaking to sail a tall ship and minimise the use of the motor as much as possible.”

— Marc, Expedition ON
