The Journey
What it feels like
Sail out of wild and green Madeira and watch the cliffs shrink on the horizon. Open ocean for a few days, watches around the clock, the Atlantic stretching in every direction. Then a green peak rises from the sea and you’ll sail into another country, powered by the wind. Few things are more exciting than leaving countries, and arriving in countries, by sail. Spotting dolphins is pretty much guaranteed. Whales if we’re lucky.
Route & rhythm
Madeira and the Canary Islands are part of the Macaronesia island archipelago. Madeira belongs to Portugal, the Canary Islands to Spain. The islands in between are nature protected and only reachable by sail. A unique opportunity to connect with nature, wildlife, and away from humanity.
From Funchal, Madeira we sail south through the Macaronesia archipelago toward the Canary Islands. Roughly 300 nautical miles over 10 days. We drop anchor on the islands in between where weather and permits allow. Think Ilhas Selvagens, Ilhas Desertas, Lobos, Isla Graciosa, Fuerteventura. Nothing is fixed. The weather rules and we adjust the sails as we go. The final stretch is the sail down the Canary Islands chain to Tenerife.
When sailing the day runs on watches. A few hours on, a few hours off, around the clock. In between: cooking, eating together, sleeping, reading, sail handling. At anchor: swimming, exploring ashore, meals around the big communal table. The boat is your base, the ocean and islands your backyard. Conversations on watch get deep fast. No experience needed. You learn by doing.
Experience
A first taste of offshore sailing without committing to a full ocean crossing. A few days at sea, then island time where the weather lets us. Twister carries a small crew, big enough for real community at sea. The speed at which strangers stop feeling like strangers always surprises me.
Most of us spend more time indoors than outdoors. It’s easy to forget the natural world we’re coming from and living in. On the ocean, you face the wind and water elements and find that connection to nature. Imagine a scene with no traffic, no news, no pollution, no civilisation. Just wind and water, plenty of that. A scene where you can gaze for hours to the millions of stars above you, enjoy the dozens of dolphins sliding through the water at the bow of the boat, admire the pink-orange-red sunrises and sunsets, without any airplane trails changing the fluffy and cauliflower-like cloud patterns.

Participation
This is not a luxury charter. It’s a hands-on, team-based way of travelling. We sail, anchor, cook, and live together as one crew. This is an adventure and on purpose not planned out into detail. We cannot plan the weather and we adjust the sails as we go.
Moments
First sight of land rising from the sea after days of open ocean. Sunrise anchorages and a swim before breakfast. Walking ashore on islands that only sailors get to. Loading old surfboards onto the deck, which will be cargo sailed to a community in Cape Verde in collaboration with the Clean Ocean Project. Phosphorescence and a beautiful night sky in the wake on a night watch.
The Vessel
SV Twister is a schooner built in 1902. Originally a wooden fishing boat, her hull was replaced with steel fifty-five years later so she could keep sailing. She still does. She’s beautiful. She’s fast. She’s solid. She’s big. She’s spacious. She’s super comfortable. She’s got soul. She lasts. Dutch flag, modern offshore comforts, every safety certificate. Last season she sailed 5,000 nautical miles offshore in conditions from champagne sailing to a 9 Beaufort. The only thing that broke were two plates.
- Schooner built 1902, 36 m (118′), 88 tonnes
- 6 sails, 332.5 m² sail area, Mercedes Benz 300 PK engine
- 22 berths in shared cabins, 2 bathrooms
- Dutch flag, full offshore safety certificates
- Home port: Amsterdam, Holland

Still smiling at the memories! Met, and still talking to, some lovely people. Refreshed my nautical skills (helming, navigation, astro identification, etc.) Shared some great experiences through conversation, music, stories, yoga, cooking together, seeing ocean wildlife, and so much more!
— Richard (Expedition ON)
The things I like the most about trips with Ocean Nomads is the mix of different nationalities, ages and levels of experience. There’s always a general plan but also plenty of opportunity for spontaneity to have a real adventure.
— Louise (Madeira-Canary Islands)
