The Journey
What it feels like
Warm water. Trade wind breeze. This is a Caribbean sailing trip at its most relaxed. Waking up at anchor and jumping into the Caribbean Sea before breakfast. Days move with the wind. You sail to the next island, snorkel a reef, hike to a viewpoint, or drift through a quiet bay with no one else around. Evenings are simple: cooking together on deck, watching the sun go down, falling asleep to the sound of water against the hull. Few things are more exciting than leaving countries, and arriving in countries, by sail.
Route & rhythm
Twister has just arrived in Martinique from the Atlantic crossing. This first loop heads south through the Windward Islands toward the Grenadines. Around 350 nautical miles all up, in short hops. The Grenadines are the heart of this one: think Bequia, the Tobago Cays, Union Island, and Mayreau. Stops like St. Lucia and St. Vincent may be on the way too. There is no fixed route. The trade winds guide us, and we drop anchor where the wind and the day allow.
Passages between islands are short, often just a few hours. Some days we sail longer. Other days we stay put, explore, or simply float. A typical day starts with a swim and coffee on deck. We sail through the morning, arrive somewhere new by afternoon, and spend the rest of the day in the water, on shore, or just being. Most nights we anchor rather than stay in marinas. The boat is your base, the ocean is your backyard.
Experience
This is the reward loop after the Atlantic crossing, and a beautiful trip in its own right. Warm water, short passages, a lot of time at anchor. Twister carries a small crew, big enough for a real community feel at sea with fellow Ocean Nomads from all kinds of backgrounds, sharing similar vibes and values. The speed at which strangers stop feeling like strangers still surprises me. No offshore watches around the clock, no cold weather, mostly day sailing. Just Caribbean rhythm.

Participation
No experience needed. You learn by doing. We sail, cook, anchor, and live together as one crew. Plans may change with the weather. That’s part of it.
Moments
Jumping into turquoise water seconds after waking up. Spotting dolphins riding the bow wave. Hiking to a viewpoint and seeing nothing but Caribbean blue or the next island country. Anchoring in a bay with turtles swimming beneath the boat. Freshly chopped fruit for breakfast. Watching the green flash at sunset. Night swimming in bioluminescent water under a sky full of stars.
The Vessel
SV Twister is a schooner built in 1902. Originally a wooden fishing boat, her hull was replaced with steel fifty-five years later so she could keep sailing. She still does. Beautiful, solid, spacious, and full of soul. No plastic push buttons or winches. Dutch flag, modern offshore comforts, and every safety certificate. Last season she sailed 5.000 nautical miles offshore in conditions from champagne sailing to a 9 Beaufort. The only thing that broke were two plates.
- Schooner built 1902, 36 m (118′), 88 tonnes
- 6 sails, 332.5 m² sail area, Mercedes Benz 300 PK engine
- 22 berths in shared cabins, 2 bathrooms
- Dutch flag, full offshore safety certificates
- Home port: Amsterdam, Holland

It’s the people who make the adventure
“The sailing with such a beautiful ship. It is absolutely breathtaking to sail a tall ship and minimise the use of the motor as much as possible. I joined the Twister Expedition to share my knowledge as a marine scientist studying cetaceans. Small tasks such as collecting data on whales and dolphins can have a large impact in the conservation of species.”
Marc, sailed Twister
“The experience on Twister with other Ocean Nomads was just really beautiful, and I felt connected for the first time in decades. I felt part of a community and had companionship. So inclusive of gender, nationality and, most importantly, age. It gave me everything I was looking for: connection, companionship, purpose, and being one with nature.”

More from the crew
“This was one of the most epic experiences of my life so far, and I can tell it is just the beginning. The ocean has taught me so many lessons. To embrace all experiences, not worry so much, and just be in the moment. Weeks without connection to the outside world was absolutely glorious. I feel reset. Being around a crew every day was amazing. To interact naturally, feel part of a family of diverse ages, nationalities and backgrounds. My heart feels so full.”
Sael, sailed Twister
“Good sailing experience that makes me feel more confident on open seas. Made good connections to nice people and got valuable insights for my master plan.”
