If not now, then when?

Expedition ON Macaronesia is an experience unlike anything we’ve ever organized. SV Twister allows us to connect more souls in one place, away from civilization where we disconnect from everything but each other and nature. This is a hands-on active expedition. We have a professional captain and crew who’ll be showing us the ropes. Everyone on board is expected to take part in the running of the ship. It’s part of the fun, experience, development and epiphany moment creation.

Macaronesia

Madeira and the Canary Islands are part of the Macaronesia island archipelago. Madeira belongs to Portugal and the Canary Islands to Spain. This voyage we depart in Madeira, arrive in Lanzarote and will drop anchor on the islands in between where permitted. It’s all nature protected and the only way to reach the islands are by sail. A unique opportunity to connect with nature, wildlife and away from humanity.

She’s beautiful. She’s fast. She’s solid. She’s big. She’s spacious. She’s super comfortable. She’s got soul. She lasts.

Sailing ship Twister is a schooner built in 1902, with an impressive story to tell. Originally a fishing boat built out of wood, fifty-five years later, her wooden hull was replaced for a steel one so she could continue to fish.

After 17 years in various ports, Twister was again rebuilt into the modern schooner that she now is. After the baptism in May 1999, under the name Twister, her speed since then proves the ship to be one of the fastest sailing ships of the Northern Europe sailing area. Renovated again in 2012, she was updated with all new safety features/equipment and all the modern comforts you could possibly want from a charter vessel. She sails under the highly regarded Dutch flag and complies with all related safety certificates.

Her current owners are driven to sail her far, and with purpose. The aim is to facilitate memorable expeditions that people will treasure for life, and contribute towards a better planet.

Last season she sailed around the Atlantic and proved her strength once again. This year she’ll sail the Atlantic from North to South, with Ocean Nomads on Expedition ON | Atlantic.

Join us in Autumn to meet her for yourself. In the meantime, learn more about Twister here:

EXPERIENCE – LIFESTYLE – TRAVEL – PURPOSE – CONNECTION – NATURE

This is not just an expedition you join for a few weeks and that’s it. This is an experience that will change the way you approach life, nature and the ocean. We believe our ON expeditions are just the beginning for plotting the next course in your life. By jumping on board this voyage, you will also join our expanding global network of impact-driven travellers, ocean entrepreneurs, sailors, (free)divers, surfers, and active salty souls passionate about the ocean and eager to do good. On our community platform we start and continue the conversation, action, team-ups and meet-ups beyond our events and expeditions to maximize the impact, fun, and ripple effects for ocean adventure and action. We got your back on this expedition before and the journey after.

The Experience

Most of us spend more time indoors than outdoors. It’s easy to forget the natural world we’re coming from and living in. On the ocean, you face the wind and water elements and find that connection to nature. Imagine a scene with no traffic, no news, no pollution, no civilisation. Just wind and water – plenty of that! A scene where you can gaze for hours to the millions of stars above you; enjoy the dozens of dolphins sliding through the water at the bow of the boat; admire the pink-orange-red sunrises and sunsets, without any airplane trails changing the fluffy and cauliflower-like cloud patterns.

You’ll become very aware of the natural world around you. This inspires. And it’s eye-opening. You come to realise how disconnected from nature we are in our daily lives. In the middle of nature, far away from civilisation, you will see human impact. Usually we’re far away. It’s hard to make it tangible. It doesn’t really affect us. Or so we think. But by being out there, you literally broaden your horizon. Experience will make you think, gain fresh perspectives, and may inspire you to act to turn the tide of the ocean challenges.

The Impact

Our drive: Protecting our playground! 💙

Saving the ocean is at the core of the Ocean Nomads movement.

The Ocean is the heart of the planet. Water covers more than two-thirds of the Earth’s surface. Sea plants, like Posidonia, produce 70% of the oxygen we breathe, and the deep waters are home to wildlife and some of the biggest creatures on earth. It provides us with food, jobs, life, entertainment, and sailing! Without it, we cannot survive.

We believe that by getting the ocean your heart, will change everything.

On this expedition we also bring a microplastic trawler, provision together, research, talk, explore so all of us learn more. Read more about our impact approach and creating ripple effects on our impact page

Who's joining?

It’s the people who make the adventure. This is the main message Suzanne learned after having (hitch)sailed 30.000 miles on +50 different boats. We carefully curate a diverse, multi-skilled crew who share a similar mindset, to create a powerful team mix. It makes the difference.

From the Ocean Nomads team, Suzanne will also be joining Expedition ON.

WHAT ABOUT Covid 19?

Desperate to head back to sea on a salty adventure? So are we. But we’ll do it safely.

Two things are for sure: 1. That nothing is for sure. 2. That nature is the answer to basically everything. So we’re moving forward with our trip planning and ready to adapt again if needed.

Like many of you, we had to live with a lot of change the past. We were sad that we had to cancel earlier trips. Now as we learned that uncertainty is a constant, we’re go ahead with organising an expedition on a bigger ship in international waters, within the EU, away from the land. No better place to be than at sea!

We will be running the trip in accordance with all local regulations which are subject to change.

Everyone joining must take responsibility for adhering to their home country’s travel advice and local regulations relevant to the trip.

Twister is member of the VZR Warranty Fund, so you can book with peace of mind and receive your rights. Please take extra care to ensure your travel insurance is valid. We will send out more detailed info to those joining nearer the time, in accordance with the latest guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

You have a burning desire for exploration. You like to create, grow and do good. You live in, on or near the ocean to cultivate a conscious alternative active lifestyle, or desire to do so. You can’t be ‘boxed.’  You have a variety of interests with nature, health, simplicity, adventure and sustainability at the centre of it. The ocean is your home. Your playground. Your place to treasure, respect, and protect. The thought of leaving land for a few weeks excites you. You have a ‘can be done’ mindset. You have a team spirit.

You don’t need to have sailing experience. We believe and have experienced that a positive mindset and active adaptive attitude is much more valuable. Our Captain and professional crew are happy teaching you the ropes. After some days at sea you can sail the ship yourself! You need to be physically and emotionally fit. You are happy to take part in the running of the ship which include night watching, cooking, cleaning, and hoisting heavy sails. This on an angle, and in all sorts of weather conditions. You don’t mind getting wet, or salty, and go for a while without a fresh water shower, or limited fresh foods.

When it’s maybe not for you?

  • You’re not excited about sailing and all that comes with it
  • You don’t want to share your space with others
  • You can’t adapt to a new situation with new people
  • You only want to sit back and relax
  • You’re not in a positive headspace for this kind of trip

If any of these are true for you, then you might want to pass on an adventure like this for now. But any other doubts can be taken away! There’s only one way to find out; make the decision and go for it! The seemingly impossible is not the path of the least resistance, but definitely the most rewarding one. You just need willpower, determination and a smile on your face.

Yes. This trip we aim to stop on the remote islands in between Maderia and Lanzarote. Places you otherwise wouldn’t reach. Ever.  We have to go with the best weather windows for the most enjoyable and safe experience. We’re super open and flexible to include some extra adventure elements.

“The adrenaline and stress of an adventure are better than a thousand peaceful days.” – Paulo Coelho

Less is more; less is more; less is more! But packing for weeks at sea, not being sure what the weather will do, what a regular day will look like, and what the next adventure will be? What to bring?
On our member platform, you’ll find an extensive offshore sailing packing list of the most important things to consider to bring as a crew member, for a pleasant, safe and happy ride. As a general rule, if you can live without it, leave it at home. For this trip a good set of waterproofs suitable for offshore sailing, and layers of clothes are key. What we’ll provide for you: towels, bed linen and a life jacket.

If this is really beyond your budget we totally understand. That’s why we also host free meet-ups, more budget friendly trips and created the Ocean Nomads membership space to accelerate more personal dreams and missions. We have +35 members with vessels who are happy to take you on board. If you’re really determined to join, consider doing a fundraiser, crowdfunding or try to find sponsorship. This is a life-changing experience that people are willing to support. Not only for your own personal development but for the contribution we’ll be making with this expedition all together.

In general with our trips, where possible we also offer scholarship options. Above all we want to make sailing accessible. Note that this trip already goes at a price that’s usually a scholarship rate for maritime school students. We do love to hear from you if you’d like to be in our scholarship database. Members receive priority but we’ll consider everyone. It’s all sorts of contributions we’re after and all sorts of teaching we can share Apply for a Scholarship to be considered here.

What else? Sub-rent your house, tent, camper so you don’t have rent. Eliminate what you don’t need. Stop going out for dinner. Minimize, simplify and invest in experience instead of things. You got this! And we are here to help! Find more ideas, and answers on our Ocean Nomads community member space.

Possibly! Initially, the idea was to also take Twister across the Atlantic from East to West. Given the pandemic situation, this year she stays in the EU. We may also organize something in the Canaries and/or from the Canaries to Europe.  Join our Membership community to stay in the loop.

One reason we can make this trip more affordable than other similar voyages out there is by provisioning ourselves, as a team. Unlike the ‘usual’ classic sailboat offshore voyages where one is generally more a ‘passenger,’ with Ocean Nomads we do things differently. No chef or food services will be present.

We will figure this out together. And we provide together. And that’s a great part of the fun and making a difference! We like the challenge of sourcing local, healthy, budget-friendly foods for a voyage. Not only to maximize our positive impact but great for team building too! We’ve provisioned for numerous Atlantic Crossings before and already have created an extensive resource present on our membership platform on what to consider. This time it’s different, we’re quite a bunch and we’ll be provisioning in the Netherlands. It’s going to be one big team effort. And we think it’s a cool challenge!

Please note that our trips are vegetarian and no alcohol at sea will be consumed. We believe it’s healthier for us, the environment and our wallet. Also, we don’t catch fish. Here’s why. If you really struggle with the idea of having no meat or fish for 3 weeks, let us know and we can talk about what’s possible to support.

This is an adventure and on purpose not planned out into detail. We cannot plan the weather and we adjust the sails as we go.

Usually, a trip on a traditional sailing ship like Twister is out of reach because of a lack of funds, qualifications or the desire to be more than just a ‘passenger.’ As Walt Disney says, ‘If it can be dreamt, it can be done’. We’re really teaming up to make the trip about half the investment than anything else out there. The vessel, captain and crew have all the necessary qualifications on board to comply with safety and rules under the Dutch flag. But you can fully participate without having the qualifications. It can be a stepping stone to move forward in the classic sailing industry. While this trip is a great mile builder it’s not intended to be one. The intention is to bring a cool bunch together, accelerate each others’ journeys, create memories for life, create connections for life, explore, experience nature at its purest, and travel distances with the least environmental impact.

  1. To apply fill our the application form.  The more we learn about you the better we can see if it’s a match. We get back to you as soon as possible. Bear in mind we’re also nomadding and don’t always have immediate possibilities to reply so don’t worry if you do not hear something back right away.
  2. We’ll have a chat on the phone to better get to know each other and make sure we’re on the same page.
  3. If we’re all happy, a 500 euro downpayment will confirm your spot.
  4. The rest of the trip contribution is due 4 weeks prior to the start of the expedition.

We offer a cancellation free of charge for a period of one week after your spot is confirmed. This way you can check flights and make arrangements with calm. You’ll get your money back if something doesn’t work out.

We create a group on the Ocean Nomads membership platform for all approved expedition crew members. This way the fun and preparation starts SOON and way before the actual trip!
